This has the added advantage that I don't need to include everything I have in Piwigo, I can just link albums one at a time, excluding what I don't care to share.

Instead of the double copies I was concerned with, it's possible to point Piwigo to the back up directories via symbolic link in /piwigo/galleries. The remote server will also have Piwigo installed on it. As far as files go the remote server at this point is nothing but a remote back up system (and you guys all back up your pictures. We will then rsync our photos onto the remote server, each in our own directory. This is a great thing to do anyway, because it makes your photos easily searchable accross different systems. The important step here is to make sure DigiKam (or whatever) embeds IPTC metadata into the JPEG files. We'll both sort and tag them on our own, probably with some pre established tags we can agree on. I'll be taking my own pictures, my sister will be taking her own. No replies so far, but I did get an upvote so that's enough motivation for me to share the plan I've come up with so far: I hope my topic still falls within the scope of this subreddit, I realize it's not quite photography as much as what to do with it afterwards. Is there any established way to interface Digikam with photo hosting software? Any ideas from people who've been in a similar situation would be great. Surely there are redditors here who host their own pictures. I know there's an option in Digikam to export to Piwigo, but that would mean we'd have two copies of every picture we want to share on the server, which seems rather silly and would be a waste of storage space. I see projects such as Piwigo or Lychee that seem to provide the web interface I want, but as far as I can tell they have they're own organizational system and I don't want them to interfere with Digikam.

Everything up to here seems like it should be straightforward, but the sharing part is where I get a bit lost. We'll be mounting the remote drive on our computers and point Digikam to it so we can add, edit and tag all the pictures collaboratively. The goal is to have a common repository where we both put our photos, such as the web server I already have. We've both been a bit messy organizing our files, but after looking into Digikam (we're photo noobs) it seems like getting our photos under control will be doable thanks to tags and all that Digikam jazz. After talking about it for quite a while, my sister and I have finally decided to combine our photo collection and are trying to come up with a good way to share some of our collection.
